A Gothic Ode for Bastille Day

On Bastille Day, July 14, 2025, my client-friend’s cheeky rhyme about Louis XVI & Marie Antoinette sparked a gothic retort. Enjoy this fluid poem, born of our banter.
Louie was King and Marie was Queen,
He tried to be nice, but she was so mean.
No Filet Mignon, give them cake instead,
Said Louie, “Marie, have you lost your head?”
In Versailles’ glow, where chandeliers gleam,
Marie’s cruel jests fueled a rebel’s scheme.
“Cake, not bread!” she mocked with disdain,
Till Bastille’s fall roared the people’s refrain.
Oh, Louie and Marie, in their palace’s sheen,
She scoffed at his kindness, chasing opulent dreams.
“Cake for the masses?” she laughed with a sneer,
But history’s shadow whispered, “Revolt draws near!”
King Louie’s grace met Marie’s haughty scheme,
Her cake-fed scorn dimmed their royal esteem.
As guillotines gleamed ‘neath a revolutionary sky,
Their gilded world crumbled, with no chance to sigh.
