Point Lookout Lighthouse
Welcome to Gothic Dust Diaries... where shadows linger and whispers from the past echo through time.
Today, we journey to the windswept shores of Maryland, to one of the most paranormally active lighthouses in the United States—Point Lookout Lighthouse; the most haunted Lighthouse.
A beacon once meant to guide ships now casts its eerie glow on centuries of haunting history.
Built in 1830, this lighthouse sits at the southern tip of Maryland’s St. Mary’s County, where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Potomac River. But Point Lookout’s story goes far beyond nautical navigation…
During the Civil War, the area was transformed into a Union prisoner-of-war camp known as Camp Hoffman, which at its peak held over 20,000 Confederate soldiers. The conditions? Unimaginably harsh—disease, starvation, exposure. Many never made it out alive.
Their spirits, it seems… never left.
Over the years, countless paranormal encounters have been reported at Point Lookout.
Visitors have heard:
Disembodied moans and screams from the beach,
The sound of footsteps pacing upstairs when no one is there,
And a man in Civil War attire seen wandering the lighthouse grounds.
Even park rangers and paranormal investigators have refused to stay overnight due to the intense supernatural activity.
But it’s not just soldiers. Former lighthouse keepers are said to haunt the building as well—especially Ann Davis, one of the early caretakers. Her apparition has been spotted in 19th-century dress, calmly moving through the halls, as if still watching over her beloved tower.
EMF spikes, ghostly voices on EVP recordings, cold spots… Point Lookout is a favorite among ghost hunters.
The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1966, but its legend only grows stronger with time. If you ever visit Point Lookout, take a moment to listen. You just might hear the faint cries of the past, carried on the salty breeze.
Thank you for joining me in this dusty corner of American ghostlore.
