Black Margarita

Black Margarita Recipe: Skeleton’s Grasp

In the flickering shadows of a haunted manor, the Skeleton’s Grasp emerges — a black margarita as dark and enigmatic as a necromancer’s brew. Crafted with activated charcoal, its inky depths swirl in a skeletal hand glass, evoking a cursed relic clutched by spectral fingers. A rim of black lava salt lends a gritty, otherworldly bite, while a lone orange slice glows like a harvest moon, hinting at forbidden rituals. Each sip of this smoky, tart potion feels like a toast to midnight secrets, conjuring tales of ancient crypts and moonlit pacts.

Ingredients (makes 1 cocktail):

1½ oz silver tequila (blanco, e.g., Patrón Silver)

¾ oz Cointreau (or any orange liqueur)

1 oz fresh lime juice

½ oz agave syrup (adjust to taste; adds smoothness)

¼ tsp activated charcoal powder (food-grade, for the jet-black color)

Black lava salt (for rim; mix 1 tsp activated charcoal with 2 tbsp sea salt if unavailable)

Garnish: Orange slice (as seen in the image)

Ice: For shaking and serving

Equipment:

Cocktail shaker

Hawthorne strainer

Rocks glass or highball glass (ideally with a gothic design like the skeletal hand in the image)

Small plate (for salt rim)

Instructions:

Prepare Glass:

Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass.

Dip the rim into black lava salt (or a mix of 1 tsp activated charcoal and 2 tbsp sea salt) on a small plate to coat, creating the dark, gritty rim seen in the image.

Mix Cocktail:

In a cocktail shaker, combine 1½ oz tequila, ¾ oz Cointreau, 1 oz lime juice, ½ oz agave syrup, and ¼ tsp activated charcoal powder.

Add a handful of ice and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until chilled and the charcoal is fully dissolved (no grittiness).

Serve:

Fill the glass with ice.

Strain the cocktail into the glass over the ice.

Garnish with an orange slice, either floating on top (as in the image) or perched on the rim.

Serve immediately, letting the jet-black hue and skeletal glass set a chilling gothic mood.

 Serving Tips:

Use a skeletal hand glass or gothic-themed glassware, as in the image, to enhance the eerie aesthetic. If you don’t have one, a black or smoky glass works well.

Non-alcoholic version, replace tequila and Cointreau with orange juice and sparkling water, keeping the charcoal for color.

Health Warning:

Activated Charcoal Risks: Activated charcoal can absorb medications (e.g., birth control, vitamins) and nutrients, potentially reducing their effectiveness. Avoid consuming within 4 hours of taking medication. Excessive use may cause constipation or black stools. Use sparingly (¼ tsp per drink is safe for most), and consult a doctor if you have health concerns.

Moderation: Limit to 1–2 charcoal cocktails per night to avoid digestive issues.
