Midnight  Old Fashioned

A little darkness, a little elegance, and a splash of mystery!

A brooding, jet-black twist on the classic Old Fashioned, infused with activated charcoal for a gothic, inky appearance. The chamomile syrup adds a subtle floral note, evoking a moonlit graveyard, while the charcoal’s faint smokiness enhances the drink’s mysterious allure. Perfect for a Gothic Dust Diaries entry about a nocturnal ritual or a shadowy figure’s musings.

Ingredients (makes 1 cocktail):

2 oz Japanese whisky (e.g., Suntory Toki for smoothness)

½ oz chamomile syrup (see below for preparation)

2 dashes Angostura bitters

¼ tsp activated charcoal powder (food-grade, from capsules or powder; use sparingly)

Orange peel (for garnish)

Optional: Small edible silver pearl dust (for a subtle starry shimmer, like a night sky)

Ice: One large ice cube or sphere

Chamomile Syrup (makes enough for 4–6 drinks):

1 cup water

1 cup granulated sugar

2 tbsp dried chamomile flowers (or 2 chamomile tea bags)

Equipment:

Mixing glass

Bar spoon

Julep strainer

Rocks glass

Small saucepan (for syrup)

Instructions:

Prepare Chamomile Syrup (make ahead):

In a small saucepan, combine water and sugar over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.

Add chamomile flowers or tea bags and simmer for 5 minutes.

Remove from heat, let steep for 10 minutes, then strain into a clean jar. Cool and refrigerate (keeps for 1 month).

Mix Cocktail:

In a mixing glass, combine 2 oz Japanese whisky, ½ oz chamomile syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, and ¼ tsp activated charcoal powder.

Add ice and stir gently with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds until thoroughly chilled and the charcoal is evenly dispersed

Place a large ice cube in a rocks glass.

Strain the cocktail over the ice using a julep strainer.

Serve: If using, sprinkle a pinch of edible silver pearl dust over the drink and stir lightly to create a shimmering effect.

Express an orange peel over the glass to release oils, then drop it in or rest it on the rim.

Serve immediately.

For a non-alcoholic version, replace whisky with black tea (chilled) and add a splash of sparkling water.

Health Warning & Alternative Coloring

Disclaimer:  On about me page

Activated Charcoal: Although activated charcoal is sometimes used to create the dramatic black appearance of specialty cocktails, it can interfere with the absorption of medications and certain nutrients. It does not dissolve completely in liquids, and its use in beverages carries potential risks and is not recommended, particularly for individuals taking medications.

Safer Alternative: For the same midnight-black appearance, substitute black food coloring specifically labeled for use in beverages, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Moderation: This cocktail contains alcohol and is intended for adults of legal drinking age. Activated charcoal may also cause digestive discomfort, including constipation. Please enjoy responsibly.
